Chapter 14

Falling asleep after Olezka left proved to be next to impossible. If I knew for sure Roman hadn’t come back, I probably would have kept the comforter wrapped around my body as I moved through the house. But I very much did not want to show off my gently – heh – used body to my mate’s brother. Olezka’s mark barely even stung. In fact, it burned in a very pleasant way that reminded me of his flames and how they wrapped around me, comforting and keeping me safe.

I dressed in one of Olezka’s shirts and a pair of my sleep shorts before wandering downstairs, but I didn’t see any signs of Roman. Anxiety twisted in my stomach as I thought about Olezka leaving again. He didn’t act like it was anything out of the ordinary. He acted casual, but being called out to the field at five A.M. seemed like a problem. Then again, it was prime para hours.

I curled up on the couch with Anubis and started mindlessly watching TV, but my mind was miles and miles away. Sure, Olezka and I had finally explored our carnal natures, breaking the dam that had built since the day we met, but my anger still lingered. He was the one who reacted before taking a breath and ended up busting all our covers, yet I was the one he blamed it on. He treated me like a child who didn’t know better, but I never went in without a plan and a backup plan, and a backup plan to my backup plan.

I had ordered a powerful taser, which should be here in a couple of days. Sure, it probably wasn’t enough to knock most paras on their asses, but hopefully, it would startle them enough to give me a leg up. As Cyril and I approached the building, I’d searched for as many exits as I could in case things went sideways. Which they did. I breathed out, trying to calm back down. With Olezka, I found it easy to lose my cool, but I needed to argue with him calmly.

I passed the next few hours, lounging on the couch in a mostly vegetative state, waiting for one of the guys to show up. Since arriving back on this side of the Veil, my life pretty much revolved around the guys. Cyril had disappeared, but I still owed him a favor and knew he would show back up eventually. I still wasn’t sure why Olezka hadn’t ripped into me for that one, though I figured my day was coming.

I headed upstairs to shower, hoping it would pull me out of the funk in which I found myself. I let the hot water massage away my aches and pains; some were acquired pleasantly, some not so pleasantly. I dressed in jeans and a t-shirt then checked all of my online searches to see if anything of interest had popped up. Snooping complete, I wandered back downstairs to make a simple lunch.
